Congratulations to our inaugural engineering scholarship winner, David Lamancusa. A Junior at Grand Valley State University in the Mechanical Engineering program, David also interns at FTC&H with an extensive background in the test and balance field. He exemplified the character and motivation that will help him succeed in the field of HVAC.

In the upcoming years, please be aware of the scholarship opportunities now being offered through the Western Michigan Chapter of ASHRAE. Help spread the word to any student within our area that has an interest in ASHRAE and is looking for scholarship assistance."

Lakeshore Lifeworks 2014 -15 Serve Project

About Lakeshore LifeWorks

Lakeshore LifeWorks is located in Holland, Michigan and is a ministry devoted to serving aging out foster youth and kids living on the streets in West Michigan. The focus of this organization is to provide housing, biblical training, mentoring, employment and life skills for the homeless youths in the community.

Project Description

Dwelling which consists of a number of apartments which are heated with hot water base board heaters (fin tube) installed on exterior walls. Primary control consists of zone valves energized by apartment thermostats. All base board heaters are served with (1) 200.0 MBH input, single stage fire, 1979 hot water boiler which has exceeded its life and was in need of replacement.

Project Objective

To provide and install new energy efficient, hot water boiler for Lakeshore LifeWorks.

Project Team

  • Hart & Cooley / Selkirk (Keith Page): Donated vent piping material (Polyflue), accessories, labor and financial contribution.

  • Lochinvar (Brian Zayler): Engineering support and financial contribution.

  • Macatawa Plumbing & Radiant: Donated all labor, miscellaneous system components, piping, valves and boiler start up.

  • The Macomb Group (Mike Boyd): Engineering support and financial contribution.

  • TowerPinkster A&E (Scott Smith): Engineering support and financial contribution.

Work Completed

In a coordinated effort it was determined that the existing 200.0 MBH input boiler was oversized for the application. It was decided that a 95% efficient, 155.0 MBH input boiler would be adequate for this project. The new boiler installed was a Lochinvar Knight Wall Mount model WHN155, natural gas fired, condensing and 5:1 turndown. The new boiler was installed to operate in conjunction with the existing zone valve system. The new boiler install required a new piping configuration for connection into the existing piping system within the mechanical closet, new valves, new system circulation pump, new air separator and expansion tank.

Project Outcome

The result of this project created a great deal of relief for this organization realizing failure was within the near future for their existing boiler. This was a major concern as they approached the 2015 upcoming winter. The organization has expressed great gratitude for the efforts of all who were involved. Their excitement will continue into the winter months as they experience their lower utility bills.
