November 18, 2019 - Grand Rapids City Building Tour

Starting in 2014, GMB conducted an in-depth study of the City Hall and Kent County Administration Building for the City of Grand Rapids. We reviewed their existing facilities and recommended that the City replace the Heating, Ventilating, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems which had been serving the buildings for over 45 years. Continued occupancy of the building during construction was critical which required a phased installation and temporary conditioning of the building. The primary goal of the HVAC replacement was to improve occupant comfort and energy efficiency.  While budget constraints eliminated the possibility of replacing the building terminal systems (induction units and reheat coils), we worked to help them meet their goal by replacing the primary building central equipment and utilizing a new control system to maximize the improvements.  The final project scope included building controls, 7 air handling units (including 2 with desiccant wheels serving the induction system), cooling tower and pumps, separation and improvement of the induction zoning control, and consolidating all the building steam to hot water heating equipment
